Cote d'Azur villages - Valbonne versus Mougins

Vervolg van zaterdag...

Nadat ik zaterdag het stukje had gepost over het Zuid Franse Silicon Valley, Sophia Antipolis en het daarnaast gelegen dorp Valbonne, kreeg ik als reactie van Sien (de bazin van het café naast het Riviera Home Finders makelaarskantoor) twee luchtfoto’s, gemaakt door haar man Philippe vanuit de helicopter. Het zijn Valbonne en het hier vlakbij liggende dorp Mougins. Kijk zelf maar: wàt een verschil!! Heel leuk, Sientje, dat meedenken – hartstikke bedankt!
Het middeleeuwse dorp Mougins ligt op een heuvel tussen de zee en de bergen. In de tijd van de Romeinen was Mougins een belangrijke post aan de Via Aurelia. In de 11e eeuw werd het door de machthebbers van Antibes geschonken aan de abdij van Lérins die het oude dorp als een vesting versterkte en er een kerk bouwde. Na de Franse Revolutie werd Mougins zelfstandig en ook redelijk welvarend, voornamelijk door de bloemenproductie (rozen en jasmijn) voor de parfumeurs van Grasse.

In de twintigste eeuw kreeg Mougins de topreputatie als artiestenplaats, waar ondermeer Picasso de laatste 15 jaar van zijn leven woonde met zijn vrouw Jacqueline. Toch grappig: beide dorpen zijn honderden jaren oud, beiden hoorden bij de Abdij van Lérins, maar het vierkante lager gelegen Valbonne ontwikkelde zich tot high-tech centrum en het ronde, hoger gelegen Mougins werd het artistieke centrum!

After my post of Saturday about the Silicon Valley of the South of France, Sophia Antipolis and nearby village Valbonne, I got an email from Sien, innkeeper of the café next to the Riviera Home Finders offices, with two air photographs, made by her husband Philippe from the helicopter. They are Valbonne and nearby village Mougins. See for yourself: What a difference!! Very nice, Sientje thank you so much! The medieval village Mougins lies on a hill between the sea and the mountains. In the time of the Romans, Mougins was an important post on the Via Aurelia. In the 11th century it was given to the abbey of Lérins, that reinforced the old village and built a church. After the French revolution Mougins became independent and also rather prosperous, mainly by the flower production (rose and jasmine) for the perfume producers of Grasse. In the twentieth century Mougins got the top reputation as village for artists. Pablo Picasso lived there the last 15 years of his life with his Jacqueline. So – both old, both belonged to the abbey of Lérins but the square, low-lying Valbonne became high-tech and the circular, high up one, Mougins became artistic!
