Wetenswaardigheden over Valbonne - Sophia Antipolis

Behalve een groot aantal kostbare en bijzondere villa’s is er aan de Cote d’Azur ook nog een centrum voor de modernste technologie: SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS, ook wel de Franse “Silicon valley” genoemd. Verspreid over 2500 hectare bevinden zich er een universiteit en diverse high-tech bedrijven -waarvan je overigens, als je er doorheen rijdt niets merkt! Het is groen, bergachtig, met palmen, mimosa en cypressen. Sophia Antipolis werd in 1974 geopend, als idee van Pierre Laffitte, directeur van de prestigieuze “Ecole de Mines” in Parijs. Zijn bedoeling was om wetenschappers en ontwikkelaars de gelegenheid te geven om hun ideeën op het hoogste niveau ongestoord vorm te kunnen geven, en elke maand bijeen te komen om over hun werk te discussieren. Het is aardig gelukt, en nog steeds is Sophia een broedplaats voor nieuw talent en technologische ontplooiing. Het nabijgelegen oud-franse dorp Valbonne heeft flink geprofiteerd van deze ontwikkelingen. Veel van de inwoners bezaten stukken grond in Sophia, dat ze voor flinke bedragen van de hand konden doen. Als je de mannetjes met de petjes en de vrouwtjes in hun gebloemde huishoudjassen ziet schuifelen zou je het niet denken, maar de kans is groot dat ze miljonair zijn!

De Cisterciënzer kerk van Valbonne is meerdere keren gerenoveerd. Hij is oorspronkelijk gebouwd in 1199 toen de monniken van Chalais zich hier vestigden. Deze monniken vielen uiteindelijk onder de Orde van de monniken van het eiland Saint-Honorat (een van de Iles de Lerins). Die hadden een heel andere stijl, en vandaar dat Valbonne in de zestiende eeuw, herbouwd werd in de vorm van een vesting. Het is nog steeds een prachtig en romantisch vestingstadje, met een marktplaats in het midden, omringd door bogen en beschaduwd door prachtige platanen! En (misschien wel dankzij Sophia Antipolis) is er een Engelse boekwinkel in Valbonne.


Things worth knowing about Valbonne - Sophia Antipolis

Apart from the large number of valuable and extraordinary villas, the Cote d'Azur also boasts a centre for the most modern technology: SOPHIA ANTIPOLIS, the French "Silicon valley". On 2500 hectares of terrain, a university and quite a few high-tech businesses are founded- and by the way, driving through it, you will not really notice the biuildings. The surroundings are green, mountainous, with palms, mimosa and cypresses. Sophia Antipolis opened in 1974 as an idea of Pierre Laffitte, director of the prestigious "Ecole the Mines" in Paris. His intention was to give scientists and developers the opportunity to form their ideas on the highest level and meet each month to discuss their work. It has succeeded and Sophia is still a incubator for new talent and technological development.
The neighbouring old French village Valbonne has profited

considerably of these developments. Much of the inhabitants had pieces of land in Sophia and they sold them for considerable amounts. If you see the older inhabitants with their caps and flowered aprons, you wouldn’t think so, but chances are that they are millionaires…!
The Cistercian church of Valbonne has been renovated several times. Initially it has been built in the 1199 , when the monks of Chalais established themselves. These monks eventually fell under the order of the monastry of the island Saint-Honorat (of the Iles de Lerins). They had another style and thus Valbonne was rebuilt in the sixteenth century, in the form of a Bastide. It is still a splendid and romantic bastide, with a marketplace in the middle, surrounded by arcs and overshadowed by splendid plane trees! And (perhaps also thanks to Sophia Antipolis) there is an English book shop in Valbonne.
