I have posted before on the benign climate of the South of France and the effect that must have on your life expectancy. Last week I came across an article in the Nice Matin about Mademoiselle Simone Capony, who celebrated her 113th birthday in Cannes last week and is now the oldest inhabitant of France. She was born in 1894 in Charlieu in the departement Loire. Later, in 1920, she settled with her father, who was a doctor, in Cannes. She was a librarian herself. She never got married: on the 25th of may het fiancée died in the notorious battle of the Somme. In her long life she has known 23 presidents and seven popes. In 2004 she was appointed honorary citizen of Cannes.

Ik heb al eens eerder een stukje geschreven over het goedaardige klimaat van Zuid-Frankrijk en de invloed die dat moet hebben op de lengte van je leven. Toevallig stond daar pas een gerelateerd stukje over in de Nice Matin: Mademoiselle Simone Capony vierde afgelopen week in Cannes haar 113e verjaardag! Ze werd daarmee de oudste inwoner van heel Frankrijk. Ze werd in 1894 geboren in Charlieu in het departement Loire en vestigde zich later, in 1920, met haar vader, die arts was, in Cannes. Zijzelf werd bibliothecaresse. Mademoiselle Capony is nooit getrouwd: op 25 mei 1916 sneuvelde haar verloofde in de beruchte Slag aan de Somme. In haar lange leven heeft ze 23 presidenten en 7 pausen meegemaakt.In 2004 werd ze op haar 110e verjaardag benoemd tot ereburger van Cannes.

Ik zit voor een paar dagen te schilderen in Annecy - en kijk er meteen rond om te zien of het zin heeft om hier een Riviera Home Finders dependance op te richten. Bormes les Mimosas - live like a president in France

The French future ex-president, Jacques Chirac, has a presidential summer home in Bregançon. A great choice, as Riviera Home Finders will agree. His summer house is a real fort, very close to the lovely village Bormes-les-Mimosas, the most beautiful flower village of Europe. The whole village is classified as protected site by the French government. Because of a lot of chriticism on his expensive foreign holiday habits, Chirac has lately spent a lot of time in his more nearby luxury Riviera residence... I am told that during his stay, he called the mayor of Toulon (Hubert Falco) to invite him for an apéro. He got a receptionist and said "Hello, this is Jacques Chirac" to which the receptionist answered "yeah right, and you're speaking to the pope...". While in his summer residence, Jacques Chirac was photographed on his balcony, naked, bronzed, a bit plump, with a glass of champagne in one hand and binoculars in the other. There has been a little bit of scandal around this. Must be jealousy! Stark naked on your balcony with a glass of champagne, watching something you think is interesting at sea? Top ten-things-to-do-on-the-Riviera material if you ask me!

De Franse aanstaande ex-president, Jacques Chirac, heeft een presidentiëel zomerverblijf in Bregançon. Een geweldige keuze, dat kunnen alle Riviera Home Finders beamen. Het zomerhuis is een echt fort, vlak bij het prachtige stadje Bormes-les-Mimosas, de bloemigste stad van Europa. De hele plaats is trouwens door de franse regering geklassificeerd als beschermd gebied. Vanwege een hele lading kritiek op zijn nogal dure buitenlandse vakantie-gewoontes, heeft Chirac de laatste tijd veel tijd doorgebracht in zijn luxueuze Riviera Residentie.... Er is mij verteld dat Chirac kortgeleden tijdens de vakantie, de burgemeester van Toulon (Hubert Falco) opbelde om hem uit te nodigen voor een apéro. Hij kreeg iemand van de receptie en zei: "Hallo, dit is Jacques Chirac" waarop de receptionist zei "Ja hoor, en jij spreekt met de paus....." Terwijl hij in zijn zomer residentie verbleef, werd Jacques Chirac gefotografeerd op zijn balkon, naakt, bruin, een beetje dik en met een glaasje champagne in de ene hand en een verrekijker in de andere. Er is hierover zelfs een relletje geweest. Moet uit jaloezie zijn voortgekomen! Poedelnaakt op je balkon, met een glas champagne naar iets staan te kijken op zee dat je interessant vindt? Materiaal voor de top tien van leuke-dingen-in-Zuid-Frankrijk als je het mij vraagt!

Sainte Victoire: Growing Beauty

In the South of France between the departements VAR and Bouche du Rhône, lies the Montagne Sainte-Victoire, a chalk mountain ridge of over 18 kilometres. The mountain, that used to be called Mont Venture, has been one of the favourite subjects of painter Paul Cézanne and is therefore wellknown as a picture, but not many know that it is still growing... A group of geologists has proof that the western side of the Sainte Victoire has grown 7 cm between 1993 and 2003. The phenomenon can be explained through the complicated geological structure of the Provence: it moves continuously, which can be perceived by the (fortunately light) earthquakes. La Sainte Victoire is surrounded by underground faultlines and with some of the tremors, the ancient mountain is pushed up a little. The Sainte-Victoire is also famous because of a very interesting find -120 years ago- of 65 million year old dinosaur eggs that were discovered there. You can have a look at them in the Musée d'Histoire Naturelle in Aix-en-Provence

In Zuid Frankrijk, tussen de departementen VAR en de Bouche-du-Rhône, ligt een 18 kilometer lang kalksteengebergte, de Sainte Victoire. De berg, vroeger de Mont Venture geheten, is op een groot aantal schilderijen van Paul Cézanne te zien en daarom bij veel mensen bekend als afbeelding, maar weinigen weten dat hij elk jaar nog steeds een beetje hoger wordt... Een groep geologen heeft onlangs bewezen dat de westkant van de Sainte Victoire tussen 1993 en 2003 jaarlijks 7 mm is gegroeid. Dit fenomeen wordt verklaard door de gecompliceerde geologische struktuur van de Provence: die is voortdurend in beweging, te merken aan de vele (gelukkig lichte) aardschokken. Voordat hij op een businesstrip naar de USA ging, reed een succesvolle makelaar uit Monaco, met z'n Rolls naar een bank in Monte Carlo en ging naar binnen om een lening van 5.000 € te regelen. De desbetreffende employee vroeg verbaasd om zijn papieren. "Die heb ik niet" zei de man "maar misschien kan ik mijn Rolls Royce als onderpand geven?" en hij leverde de sleutels in.
De employee liet de Roller direct naar de ondergrondse parkeergarage rijden, en gaf de makelaar zijn 5.000 euro.
Twee weken later, liep de man de deur weer binnen - hij wilde de lening aflossen en zijn Rolls terug. "Dat kan, het totaalbedrag is 5.000€ en 20€ 30 cent rente" zei de bankbediende. De makelaar schreef een cheque uit en wilde weer vertekken. "Wacht even meneer" zei de bankbediende "toen u vertrokken was, heb ik u even nagetrokken en gezien dat u multi miljonair bent, dus waarom zou u in 's hemelsnaam 5.000€ willen lenen???"

De makelaar glimlachte minzaam: "waar anders in Monte Carlo kan ik mijn Roller twee weken parkeren voor 20€30?"

Before going to the US on business, a Real Estate director drove his Rolls-Royce to a Monte Carlo bank, to ask for an immediate loan of €5,000. The loan officer, taken aback, requested collateral. "Well, then, here are the keys to my Rolls-Royce", the man said.
The loan officer promptly had the car driven into the bank's underground parking for safe keeping, and gave him €5,000.
Two weeks later, the man walked through the bank's doors and asked to settle up his loan and get his car back. "That will be €5,000 in principal, and €20.30 in Interest", the loan officer said. The man wrote out a check and started to walk away.
"Wait sir", the loan officer said, "while you were gone, I found out you are a millionaire. Why in the world would you need to borrow €5,000?"
The man smiled. "Where else could I park my Rolls-Royce in Monte Carlo for two weeks and pay only €20.30?"

Pyrénées Orientales: Collioure

I have been writing lately about some South-French area's where RHF International -or Riviera Home Finders- are present, and there is still one more spot that I haven't mentioned: The Pyrénées Orientales... We have a branch there, led by the ever-active James Edgecombe. His district is quite different from the Provence and the Riviera! The prices are a bit more "sympa" than at the Riviera and you are near the Spanish border, the colours and smells are as different. I'll start with a place that James gets a lot of enquiries about: Collioure, a mediterranean coastal village, a couple of kilometers North of the Spanish border. Collioure lies in the Languedoc-Rousillion region, part of the Pyrénées Orientales. It is also the name of an AOC wine! Collioure is famous throughout France for the three-day celebration of the Festival of St Vincent, the 15th of August. That celebration is held since 1701, when the relic of the patron Saint of Collioure returned after times of heavy battle. There are games and competitions, all kinds of food and drink, concerts, a big theatre festival and dazzling fireworks! You may have guessed, Collioure has a rich history, and I will post about that someday soon!

De afgelopen tijd heb ik geschreven over een paar Zuid Franse gebieden waar onze makelaardij RHF International - oftewel Riviera Home Finders- zit. Er is nu nog één stukje zuid Frankrijk over, de Pyrenées Orientales... Ook daar hebben we een afdeling, geleid door de altijd actieve James Edgecombe. Zijn gebied is weer heel anders dan de Provence en Riviera! De prijzen van de huizen zijn iets "sympatieker" en je komt in de buurt van Spanje, dat merk je aan de stijl en de geuren en kleuren. Om te beginnen maar eens een kort stukje over een plaats waar James erg veel aanvragen voor krijgt: Collioure. Dat is een beeldschoon mediterraan kustplaatsje, een paar kilometer ten noorden van Spanje. Collioure ligt in het gedeelte van de Pyrénées Orientales dat de Languedoc-Rousillon genoemd wordt. Het is ook de naam van een AOC wijn.
Door heel Frankrijk is Collioure beroemd om z'n driedaagse viering van het Festival de St Vincent de 15e Augustus, dat nog stamt uit 1701, toen de relikwieën van de Patroon van Collioure er weer terugkeerden na tijden van heftige strijd. Er worden allerlei wedstrijden gehouden, er is vanalles te eten, concerten, een groot theater festival en een knetterend vuurwerk! Je hebt het waarschijnlijk al begrepen, Collioure heeft een rijke geschiedenis, waarover ik binnenkort nog wel een keertje post!

Croix Valmer - natural beaches

Finished another painting today - of a house in Croix Valmer, a small village in the departement VAR, on the coast of the mediterranean. As you can see it is a very green area, with lots of Eucalyptus, palmtrees, pinetrees and cypres! Croix Valmer is still reasonably quiet and has kept its traditions despite a lot of tourists in the summer period. La Croix Valmer has seven beaches with natural sand and is wellknown for its fantastic swimming water. One of the greatest beaches is Gigaro Beach, a long, sandy beach with safe bathing. The beach has restaurants, a self-service shop and a beach bar and they are open the whole season. The town itself has 220 hectares of nature reserves and has a great opportunity for hiking in the woods. Also terrific trips to look forward to along the coast -from Gigaro beach to Cap Lardier (le sentier des douaniers or the path that the customs used to get the smugglers). Vandaag weer een schilderij afgeleverd, van een huis in Croix Valmer, een klein stadje in het departement de VAR, aan de kust van de Middellandse zee. Zoals je kunt zien is het een heel groen gebied, met veel eucalyptusbomen, palmbomen, pijnbomen en cypressen! Het is nog steeds betrekkelijk rustig in Croix Valmer, en het stadje heeft veel van z'n oude tradities behouden - ondanks de toestroom van veel toeristen in de zomerperiode. La Croix Valmer heeft zeven stranden, met natuurzand en het staat bekend om de geweldige kwaliteit van het zwemwater. Het grootste strand is Gigaro plage, een langgerekt zandstrand, met veilig water. Het strand heeft restaurants, een zelfbedieningswinkel en een bar,die vrijwel constant open zijn gedurende het hoogseizoen...Het stadje zelf ligt in 220 hectare natuurgebied, met een geweldige mogelijkheid voor lange wandelingen. Je kunt ook heerlijke trips maken langs de kust -van plage Gigaro tot aan Cap Lardier bijvoorbeeld (le sentier des douaniers oftewel het paadje dat de douane gebruikte om de smokkelaars te grijpen). Ultra Provence: Luberon

Between the Alpes de Haute Provence and the Vaucluse rises the Luberon massif, a mountain that reaches from the valleys of Calavon in the north, to the Durance in the south, or from the cities Cavaillon in the west, to Manosque in the East. The Luberon is divided into the Grand Luberon and the Petit Luberon and the region is one hundred percent Provence dream, with clean air, lavender, every thinkable shade of green and white limestone hills. Atmosphere, and a whole lot of character. It isn't the setting for Peter Mayle's books for nothing! Or the district where Manon des Sources and le Chateau de ma mere, the famous and enchanting books from Marcel Pagnol, were filmed. The houses in the area are often built of dry stone, and very attractive and the villages and cities have everything that you could possibly want, culture, museums, cafées, lively outdoor markets, good food and wine, brilliant light, and a population that enjoys the simple pleasures like long good lunches on a terrace in the sun. Riviera Home Finders have an office in Valbonne, but our people are actually spread all over the South of France. Two of my colleague real estate agents, the aimable Elayne and Jean-Paul, work in the Alpilles and the Luberon. Up to now I have been posting mostly about my own, Alpes Maritimes, area - but today for the first time -and not the last, attention for one of the most beautiful parts of the Provence - the Alpilles!The Alpilles are an extension of the Luberon Massif, lying mostly in the Bouche du Rhône just above the Camarque. From a distance, they look like real mountains, hence the Alpes-related name I guess, although they are in fact hills with sharp peaks.Since the Middle ages, the Alpilles are known for their vineyards and stonefruit like almonds, abricots and olives. Wellknown villages are Arles, Cavaillon and Baux de Provence (where bauxite was discovered). And of course, on the Alpilles, lots of sheep, and shepherds, authentic rough terrain, bushy valleys, high villages, the Mistral and lots of sun, in short, exactly what you expect from the Provence-atmosphere. Next time more Provence: The Luberon...

Ze maken de indruk van een hooggebergte - vandaar de naam waarschijnlijk, hoewel het meer heuvels zijn met scherpe toppen. Sinds de middeleeuwen zijn de Alpilles bekend om hun wijngaarden en beplanting met steenvruchten, zoals amandelbomen,abrikozen en olijven. Bekende plaatsen zijn , Arles, Cavaillon en Baux-de-Provence (waar overigens Bauxiet werd ontdekt - en vernoemd). Verder op de Alpilles veel schaapjes en herders, veel authentieke ruige bebossing, hoog gelegen dorpen, de Mistral en veel zon, kortom, precies wat je verwacht van de Provence-sfeer. Volgende keer opnieuw Provence: de Luberon...

French Banks make larger profits - thanks to foreign activities

How about this: In 2006 the french bankers have earned more than 28 Billion Euros, an increase of 27% compared to 2005... The activities with foreigners have contributed more than the internal activities, the French trading doesn't bring so much profit as it used to. Reason for all banking institutions to stress that in this election times, no one can change the tariff policy of the banks, as some candidates want to achieve... This would endanger the employment of 400,000 people and an activity that stands for 28% of the Gross National Product of France. For foreigners it is mainly a question of carefully watching the tariffs when doing international dealings with a french bank...

Live the good life in the South of France

Profiterolles for desert
We ate out tonight with friends and I really let myself go: at desert, where I normally only have a "déca" I now had one of my favourites: Profiterolles. They are puff cakes, filled with vanilla icecream, with black chocolate poured over them. Delicious! The word profiterolle dates back to the 16th century. The original meaning is unclear, I have looked it up, but it is presumed to be a "roll, baked under ashes".
There is a 17th-century French recipe for a "Potage de profiteolles" that describes a soup of dried small breads simmered in almond broth and garnished with truffles.
The way I mean them (with chocolate sauce and icecream) is first described in the 19th century. I have made them a lot myself (in the old days when I didn't have to watch my weight) and that is not as difficult as you might think, the puffcake or choux is quite spectacular actually!
You make it like this: in a medium saucepan, pour 10 cl water, salt and 40 grams unsalted cubed butter. Bring to the boil, let the butter melt. Remove from heat and add 80 gram flour and 1 tablespoon sugar all at once. Stir with a wooden spoon until the mixture is blended, the pastry must become a ball that doesn't stick to the pan. Let it cool down for a couple of minutes. Add the 2 eggs in the paste and incorporate them. Put balls of paste the size of a walnut on a sheet of baking paper. Leave space between, as they will rise. Bake for 20 minutes in a pre-heated 200°C oven, then turn it off and leave the door half-open to let the choux dry inside for another 15 minutes. Split in halves, fill with icecream, pour black chocolate sauce over them! Et voilà: One of the best deserts that ever was... Well, I'm not fair to crème brûlée now... and Crêpes Suzette...and... OK, some time soon we'll discuss them then!

Even wat aandacht besteden aan een huis waarvan ik erg hoop dat het Riviera Home Finders team dat verkoopt - tevens eigenbelang natuurlijk, dan kan ik er zelf een beetje gaan rondlopen om er een schilderij van te maken (dat zij dan weer weggeven aan de nieuwe eigenaars).

Het is een echte oude bastide uit de 17e eeuw, een van de laatsten die nog in min of meer originele staat is. Met een werkelijk oogstrelend uitzicht, gelegen op een prachtig stuk grond van meer dan een hectare. Vanbinnen heb je 600 vierkante meter tot je beschikking, met daarin onder meer zes grote slaapkamers met hun eigen badkamer, een schitterende eetkamer, salon, bibliotheek, wijnkelder, prachtige aangelegde tuinen met olijfbomen, twee dubbele garages en een apart (ook heel leuk) opzichtershuis. Op de foto van het zwembad zie je als je goed kijkt een abstracte sculptuur - als je nog beter kijkt blijkt het een doorgezaagde grand piano te zijn. I 'll give a bit of extra attention today to a house of which I really really hope that the Riviera Home Finders team will sell it. Also for my own sake - if they sell it, I can go there, walk around and make a couple of drawings and an aquarelle of it for the new owners!It is a real authentic old-time charming bastide, from the 17th century, still in its more or less original state. And now, another celebrity has been spotted in our neighbourhood: Mr Bean! In his latest - and definitely last- movie, he leaves London for the Riviera to enjoy a Summerholiday. All of the above-mentioned moviestar luxury plays a part in the movie, combined with the comical continuous thread that Mr Bean and a new-found buddy both are without passports, money or suitcases and both do not speak any french. Mr Bean creates a videodiary of their adventures, that ultimately is shown... on the Cannes Film festival. The movie will be the official film for Red Nose Day*) 2007, with money from the film going towards the charity Comic Relief

Dat Zuid-Frankrijk populair is bij de celebrities kan ik wel als bekend veronderstellen - de roddelbladen staan vol met foto's gemaakt door Paparazzi van beroemdheden in schaarse kleding op enorme jachten, de luxe stranden van St Tropez en niet te vergeten op de trappen van het Cannes Palais des Festivals voor het Filmfestival. Er is nu weer een nieuwe beroemdheid gesignaleerd in onze contreien: Mr Bean! In zijn nieuwste -en écht laatste- film, vertrekt hij van Londen naar de Riviera voor een zomervakantie. Alle bovengenoemde filmsterren-luxe komt er in voor, gecombineerd met een komische rode draad van Mr Bean en een nieuw-gevonden kameraad, die beiden geen paspoorten, geen geld en geen koffers meer hebben en geen van beiden Frans spreken. Mr Bean maakt van hun avonturen een videodagboek, dat uiteindelijk vertoond wordt ... op het Cannes Filmfestival. De film zal overigens de officiele film zijn van Red Nose Day*) 2007, alle opbrengst van de film gaat naar het goede doel: "Comic Relief"

*)Voor de nederlandse lezers: Red Nose Day is de belangrijkste manier waarop Comic Relief geld binnenkrijgt. Het wordt om het jaar in de lente gehouden, en wordt vaak gezien als een soort vrije dag, waarop Engelse schoolkinderen bijvoorbeeld geen uniforms hoeven te dragen. Hoofdsponsor van Comic Relief is de BBC, Red Nose day wordt afgerond met een groot BBC-avond programma (dit jaar op 16 April). Zoals de naam al zegt, staat de dag in het teken van het dragen van plastic rode neusjes, die tegen een donatie in vele winkels verkrijgbaar zijn. Iedereen, presentatoren, beroemdheden, ministers, draagt die dag zo'n neus op de tv (en misschien ook thuis - maar dat lees je niet in de roddelblaadjes)

A short history of Monaco

The original name of Monaco was Herculis Monoeci Porta.

For a long time it was occupied by the Romans, it belonged to the Provence for a while and in the 12th century it was transferred to Genua. In 1297 a Francesco Grimaldi conquered the rocky peninsula. The influential family Grimaldi was chased away from Genua, but they still planning to expand. They held Monaco, up to the present day and celebrated their 700th birthday in 1997! Monaco became very wealthy - I am told because of their Casinos - that it could permit itself to keep its citizens "tax-free"; hence the attraction to the very rich! But for the very rich from France only in the long term: In 1962 there was a conflict with France about the taxes, that ended in a ruling that makes sure that only french citizens, that live in Monaco longer than 5 years do not pay taxes to the Franch government.
Prince Albert II reigns the Principality, before that it was his father, Prince Rainier III. He was married to the American moviestar Grace Kelly, who died in a car crash in 1982. He never remarried and in 1999 Prince Rainier kept the throne for 50 years. He died six years later.
Looking at Monaco from the water (something I do on a regular basis) you notice the difference with the rest of the Côte d'Azur. It looks contemporary, businesslike and you can see the only sky-scrapers there. The Principality comprises three different parts, Monaco -the Rock and Prince's Palace, La Condamine -a luxury shopping area, with all designer brands, jewelry, top class cars and other luxury and affluence, and Monte-Carlo, the central area with the Casino and the stylish hotels around it. Monaco has about 30,000 inhabitants, of whom less than 5,000 are of Monegasque nationality. Monaco's economy is dynamic and future-oriented. An independant state that offers investors and businesspeople an exceptional and secure lifestyle as well as the advantages of an attractive fiscal system.
And it works - you can't miss it! We are quite spoilt in our neighbourhood, we see luxury cars everyday and do not blink f we see another yacht, villa with pool, a rolex or a Chanel suit, but there is only one spot that really takes your breath away when it comes to the actual BIG spending...

In 1297 veroverde ene Francesco Grimaldi rotsachtige schiereilend. De invloedrijke familie Grimaldi was uit Genua weggejaagd, maar ze waren niet armlastig en niet van plan dat te worden. Ze hebben Monaco vastgehouden tot de dag van vandaag en vierden in 1997 hun 700ste verjaardag. Monaco verdiende zoveel met de kansspelen, dat het zich kon permitteren om de bewoners belasting-vrij te houden. Vandaar de aantrekkingskracht op de zeer rijken. Maar voor de Franse
rijken alleen aantrekkelijk op de langere termijn: In 1962 ontstond er een conflict met Frankrijk, dat uiteindelijk werd opgelost door een regel die zegt dat Franse staatsburgers die minder dan vijf jaar in Monaco wonen aan de Franse staat belasting moeten betalen.

Sinds 2005 regeert Albert II het vorstendom, daarvoor was het -sinds 1949- zijn vader Rainier III. Zoals iedereen weet was hij getrouwd met de Amerikaanse filmster Grace Kelly, die in 1982 verongelukte. In 1999 was Prins Rainier III 50 jaar aan de macht, hij overleed zes jaar later.
Als je Monaco vanaf het water bekijkt (iets wat ik regelmatig doe) zie je het verschil met de rest van de Cote d'Azur. Het is "modern", volkomen volgebouwd en de enige plek met wolkenkrabbers. Het land bestaat uit 3 delen, Monaco - de rots met het Prinselijk paleis, La Condamine - een bruisend winkelgebied, met alle designermerken, juwelen, top klasse auto's en andere luxe en weelde aan de voet van de rots en Monte-Carlo - het gebied rondom het Casino, vol met chique hotels. Er wonen ongeveer 30.000 mensen, waarvan er maar 5000 de Monegaskische nationaliteit hebben.
Monaco's economie is heel toekomstgericht. Het is een onafhankelijke staat die investeerders en zakenmensen een geweldige levensstijl kan bieden, met de voordelen van een belastingloos systeem. Dat is ook wel te zien. Wij zijn natuurlijk al enorm verwend in onze buurt, alle luxe wagens zien we aan ons voorbij komen, we kijken niet meer op van een villa met zwembad, een jacht, een rolex of een Chanel-pakje maar er is maar één plek die je echt de adem beneemt, als het gaat om het echte Grote uitgeven...

Verhuizing van de Eiffeltoren
De Franse krant "Le Parisien" verbijsterde zijn lezers, toen er een bericht verscheen dat een overeenkomst was getekend om de Eiffeltoren af te breken. Het internationale symbool van franse cultuur en industriële vooruitgang zou worden gereconstrueerd in het nieuwe Euro Disney park ten Oosten van Parijs. Op de plek waar de Eiffeltoren oorspronkelijk stond, zou een stadium met 35.000 stoelen worden gebouwd, om tijdens de Olympische spelen te gebruiken. De krant werd bestookt met geschokte en diep verontwaardigde reacties...

De Eiffeltoren staat nog steeds op z'n originele plek: het bericht verscheen op 1 April.

Eiffel Tower Moves
The french journal "Le Parisien" shocked French citizens when it reported that an agreement had been signed to take Eiffel Tower apart. The symbol of French culture and industrial advancement would then be reconstructed in the Euro Disney theme park, East of Paris. In the space where the Tower stood originally, a stadium with 35.000 seats would be constructed, for the Olympic Games. The paper was pressed hard with stunned and deeply outraged reactions...
