Beautiful Bastide in Orange

RHF's office in the Provence has signed up a beautiful property in Orange. We have it exclusive and it is not only breathtakingly beautiful, it has a lot of interesting extra's.... and here are a couple of them:It is one of the few large private residences near the historic Arc de Triomphe and it is ideal for a luxury B&B and would also be a great place for a restaurant. But of course it is also fantastic as a large family home! It has 375 m² living space on 1950 m² enclosed garden with pool and fountain. The beauty of this house is the location, close to the Arc de Triomphe. As Elayne from our Luberon office told me "already the house is worth every centime,but in the year 2011, the town of Orange are planning a revamp of the Arc de Triomphe site. They want to make it far more attractive to tourists and the value of the bastide will then rocket!!!" She also mentioned that the current owner (a dutchman by the way) has people lined up that would rent on a yearly basis. To quote Elayne once more: "it's worth its weight in gold!!" The weight is then 922.200 kilo's I guess - but kidding aside, it sounds to me like a terrific investment opportunity - and I know that some of my readers are looking for something like this!!So, in the coming time, as a service, I'll introduce you to the interesting history, the beauty and the loveliness of Orange - with the help of Elayne and mixed with my own memories.....

We hebben het in exclusiviteit en het huis is niet alleen adembenemend mooi - zoals je op de foto's wel kunt zien, het heeft ook nog een aantal interessante extra's.... en hier zijn er een paar: Het huis is een van de weinige grote privé residenties vlak bij de Arc de Triomphe en het is ideaal voor een luxe Chambre d'hôtes. Het zou ook een geweldig restaurant kunnen zijn, en natuurlijk is het uitermate geschikt als lekker groot gezinshuis. Het heeft 375m² ruimte binnen en wordt omringd door 1950 m² tuin met zwembad en fontein. Het mooie aan dit huis is de locatie, zo dicht bij de Arc de Triomphe. Zoals Elayne van ons Luberon-kantoor al zei: "Het huis is sowieso al elke centime waard, maar bovendien plant de Stad Orange in 2011 ook nog eens een volledige 'revamp' van de Arc de Triomphe omgeving. Ze willen het aantrekkelijker maken voor de toeristen - en reken maar dat dan de prijs de pan uit zal rijzen!! Ze vertelde ook nog dat de huidige eigenaar (een Nederlander overigens!) een lijst met mensen heeft die het op jaarbasis willen huren. Kortom, om Elayne nog een keer aan te halen: "het huis is z'n gewicht waard in goud!!". Het zou dan dus 922.200 kilo moeten wegen - maar, serieus, het lijkt mij een van de betere investeringsmogelijheden - en ik weet toevallig dat sommige van mijn lezertjes naar zoiets op zoek zijn!! Dus, binnenkort, als service aan jullie, zal ik jullie een introductie geven van de interessante geschiedenis, de schoonheid en de liefelijkheid van Orange - met de hulp van Elayne en vermengd met mijn eigen herinneringen...

Jazz Festival Juan les Pins - de geschiedenis

Juan-les-Pins is een stadje in de gemeente Antibes, dat onder andere bekend is vanwege het Jazz Festival dat jaarlijks in juli georganiseerd wordt. New Orleans is de zusterstad van Juan les Pins en heel lang had Juan les Pins een carnaval waarbij jazzbands uit New Orleans, maar ook lokale bands door de straten paradeerden.
Maar het begon pas echt met Gerald Murphy, de zoon van een rijke New Yorker die Europa goed kende omdat hij typisch "europese" kostbare objecten importeerde en in Amerika verkocht. Gerald zelf hield echter meer van muziek, en schilderen. Hij verhuisde naar Parijs, en naar Cap d'Antibes, sloot vriendschap met allerlei kunstenaars en beroemdheden en hij introduceerde zijn favoriete muziekstijl, die van de zwarte Amerikanen. In 1929, werd het openlucht theater Théâtre de Verdure geopend, in het hart van het pijnbomenwoud en dat was de voorloper van de Jazz in le Pinède. In het tweede seizoen, ontving Juan’s nieuwe casino op een avond een groep Charleston dansers. De Murphys vonden het geweldig en organiseerden een soortgelijk privéfeest. Die avond werd de inspiratiebron voor Scott Fitzgerald’s meest bekende roman ‘Tender Is the Night’, de lifestyle van de Murphys’ in Antibes stond overigens model voor zijn andere bekende roman ‘Les Enfants du Jazz’.
In 1932, vierde Juan les Pins de 250ste verjaardag van "champagne" en als eerbetoon aan Dom Pérignon, speelden er drie orkesten jazz, tango and rumba. Jazz-bands traden ook voortdurend op in het Casino en toen in 1936 Radio-Méditerranée begon uit te zenden vanaf het Saint-Jean plateau in Antibes, was in Juan-les-Pins, jazz een permanent onderdeel van het landschap geworden.

Het eerste Jazz Festival in le Pinède Gould werd georganiseerd in 1960 door twee musici en daar traden beroemdheden op als Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald en vele anderen. "Jazz in Juan" viert inmiddels alweer z'n 46e verjaardag dit jaar. het is een legendarische plek, waar jazz tegelijkertijd een herinnering is, alive and kicking en voortdurend vernieuwd. Mocht je in de buurt zijn in juli - ga er naar toe en voel de vibraties - ze zijn hemels!

Jazz Festival Juan les Pins - short history

Juan-les-Pins is a town in the commune of Antibes, famous for its annual jazz festival in July. The sister-city of Juan les Pins is New Orleans and for a long time, Juan les Pins had a carnival, with jazz bands from New Orleans as well as local bands parading through the streets.

But it all really began with Gerald Murphy, the son of a rich New Yorker who knew Europe very well as he imported precious typically "european" objects from there. Gerald however preferred music and painting. He moved to Paris and Cap d'Antibes, became friends with a lot of artists and celebrities and introduced his favourite musical style, that of the Black Americans. In 1929, in the heart of the pine grove, the open air Théâtre de Verdure was opened, the ancestor of the Jazz in le Pinède. During the second season, Juan’s new casino welcomed a troupe of charleston dancers one evening. The Murphys loved it and organised a private party. This evening inspired Scott Fitzgerald’s most famous novel, ‘Tender Is the Night’, and the Murphys’ lifestyle in Antibes would serve as a model for ‘Les Enfants du Jazz’.

In 1932, Juan celebrated the 250th anniverary of champagne and for a tribute to Dom Pérignon, three orchestras played jazz, tango and rumba. Jazz-bands performed one after another at the Casino and in 1936 Radio-Méditerranée set up its transmitter on the Saint-Jean plateau in Antibes and from then on, in Juan-les-Pins, jazz was to be a permanent part of the landscape. The first Jazz Festival in le Pinède Gould was organized in 1960 by two musicians, and it hosted famous names, like Ray Charles, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and many others. Okee, speciaal voor onze lezer in Tietjerkstradeel, die geen talen over de grens leest, een stukkie in het nederlands: We waren er - in Juan les Pins, waar het International Jazz Festival elk jaar plaatsvindt. Ik was er voor het eerst, in de "Temple van de Jazz", de Pinède Gould, maar ik kan je verzekeren, het is adembenemend! We zaten op het zand, een peetje te picknicken, luisterend naar geweldige muziek met op de achtergrond de zachte geluiden van de middellandse zee en het onvergetelijke plaatje van de zon, die ondergaat boven het Estérel gebrergte... en ik was niet de enige die het fijn vond: Norah Jones zei het ook: "Wàt een prachtig uitzicht- Als jullie het niet erg vinden kijk ik deze kant op" en later: "Ik ga nu een paar liedjes van mijn nieuwe album spelen. Ik hoop dat jullie ze mooi vinden en zo niet: dan heb je altijd het uitzicht nog..."

We waren er met het Riviera Home Finders team (wèrken die mensen wel eens!!) en hebben ons slap gelachen toen de gitarist die het voorprogramma verzorgde, het over het prachtige uitzicht had en daaraan toevoegde "Ik hoop hier ooit nog eens een huis te kopen" waarop drie van onze jongens opsprongen en ik koor riepen: "bel Riviera Home Finders!!"

Jazz in Juan les Pins

We were there - in Juan les Pins, where the International Jazz Festival takes place. I had never been there before, in the "temple of jazz", the Pinède Gould, but it is breathtaking - we sat on the sand, having a light picnic, listening to fantastic music, with the soft sound of the Mediterranean sea in the background and the unforgettable view of the sun going down in the Esterel Mountains.... and I was not the only one who enjoyed it: Norah Jones said it too: "What a great view - If you don't mind I'll face this way" and later: "I'll play a couple of songs from my new album - I hope you like them, but if you don't - you always have the view..."

We were there with the Riviera Home Finders team (do these people éver work!!) and had a great laugh when the first musician (he was good - but I didn't catch his name - if any of you know who he was, tell me please!) anyway, when that guy referred to the stunning view and then said: "I hope to someday own a house here" at least three of us stood up and yelled "call Riviera Home Finders!!"

Fireworks - Retrospective

After the Fireworks, Jeroen burns the traditional flareOK, you asked for it! - the fireworks of Bastille Night the 14th were so great and we had such a good time with the Riviera Home Finders team (and some clients and their kids) on the boat, that I cannot resist to post some of the pictures we made.

The RHF people are coming aboard - brought in two trips with our beautiful fast tender (whose skipper, RHF's Boss and Ferryman Richard Green, almost got a ticket for boatspeeding) ...

We ate and drank until it was 10PM and dark enough... and then the French Anthem started, preluding the fireworks. And they... were chickenskin impressive!!

After that, the extra that you have when you are on a boat: the concert of fog horns, and the burning of rescue flares that are out of date (or not, as in our case...). Man, did we enjoy it all!!

Painting in the Côte d'Azur

Nederlandse vertaling hieronder Just got back from a GREAT Riviera Home Finders' Fireworks trip (plus a bit of extra sailing) to find that I had forgotten to upload this one! We sold this fantastic villa in Mouans Sartoux and it changed owners last friday, the 13th! The new owners, a lovely Belgian family with 2 cute little boys, could imediately start their Côte d'Azur summer: the weather has been great, sunny, bright blue skies, warm evenings, starry skies - I wish them all the happiness in the world but don't think they really need that - they have it already!!

Net terug van onze GEWELDIGE Riviera Home Finders' Vuurwerk tocht (met een stukje extra zeilen erachteraan) en ik kom er achter dat ik vergeten ben dit stukje op de blog te zetten. Stom! Bij deze: We verkochten deze geweldige villa in Mouans Sartoux en het wisselde afgelopen vrijdag, de 13e van eigenaar! De nieuwe bewoners, een hele leuke Belgische familie met twee schattige zoontjes, konden meteen aan hun Côte d'Azur-zomer beginnen: het is geweldig weer, zonnig, helderblauwe lucht, warme avonden en een prachtige sterrenhemel - Ik wens ze alle geluk, maar denk niet dat ze het nodig hebben!!

Fireworks Competition in Cannes

Yesterday I posted about Riviera Home Finders' day on the boat, watching the fireworks in the bay of Cannes. The fireworks of 14th july are the start of the competition that has a show every week until deep in august. Fireworks companies act together to represent their country, with a combination of stunning fireworks and music -and every show must at least be 25 minutes. (the environment is more or less protected: afterwards a team of professional divers is responsible for cleaning the sea.) Cannes started the "pyromusical" events like we know them now, in 1967: That was the first year that fireworks were shot from the sea, on barges mooring in the bay of Cannes, with a musical background and telling a story. Then and now, a jury of 8 persons judges the originality of the show, the way it is built up, the synchronization with the music, the colours and the rhythm. This year, for the first time the "public" can vote as well, via the internet.

Companies from all over the world consider the Cannes award, a recognition by professionals as well as the public. It has grown to be one of the major attractions of the summer season, that attracted 80.000 viewers the first year and for tomorrow around 200.000 people are expected!
The fireworks start 10PM sharp and last around half an hour.

Apart from Saturday the 14th july, there will be fireworks on Saturday the 21st July, Sunday the 29th of July, Tuesday the 7th of August, Wednesday the 15th of august and the last one on Friday the 24th of August - after which the prize-giving ceremony will take place.

Next saturday, July 14th or quatorze juillet, is a national holiday and a bank holiday in France (ok, less spectacular on a saturday). The French remember the Revolution, and we join in! The atmosphere is better and more cheerful than normal (because as you know by now - the french do love their party!) There is dancing and music and, on many locations, there are great fioreworks (feu d'artifice). The official name is "La prise de la Bastille" or the assault of the Bastille. This happened in 1789. The people of Paris revolted against king Louis XVI, who lived in luxury and did a bad job reigning, while the people lived in poverty. They stormed the prison - a stronghold that symbolized the power of the king. Since then France is a republic, with a constitution. The birthday of that storm, that started the revolution, is still celebrated, blue-white-red flags everywhere and people wear red white and blue rosettes. At Riviera Home Finders, we have our own tradition: Our sailing-yacht sails and anchors off in front of Cannes. Cannes has a great fireworks-competition every summer, where a number of countries compete for the first prize for the most beautiful, largest and most spectacular fireworks. Very impressive, and for the quatorze juillet they reserve a top-performer! With music, which makes it even more exciting, and then seen from a boat... a very special experience! We're gonna do it and I'll report. If you want to see the fireworks of Cannes for yourself, I advise you to go early: it will be quite hard to find a parking space. And after the fireworks, go to a bar, because there is a lot of traffic trying to get out of the city! Fireworks start 10PM!

Aanstaande zaterdag, 14 juli, of quatorze Juillet, is een nationale feestdag en een vrije dag in Frankrijk (maar op zaterdag is dat minder spectaculair). De Fransen herdenken dan de Franse Revolutie - en wij doen naar hartelust mee! De stemming is nog beter en vrolijker dan normaal, want zoals jullie langzamerhand weten houden de fransen wel van een feestje... er wordt gedanst en muziek gemaakt, en, op heel veel plaatsen zijn er grote vuurwerken (feu d'artifice). De officiele benaming is "La Prise de la Bastille" oftewel de bestorming van de Bastille. Dat gebeurde op 14 juli 1789. Toen kwam de bevolking van Parijs in opstand tegen koning Louis XVI die in weelde baadde en slecht regeerde terwijl de bevolking in bittere armoede leefde. Ze bestormden de gevangenis, een burcht, die symbolisch was voor de macht van de koning.Frankrijk is sindsdien een republiek, met een grondwet. De verjaardag van de opstand waarmee de omwenteling begon wordt nog steeds gevierd, overal hangen rood-wit-blauwe vlaggen en veel mensen dragen een rood wit blauw rozet. Bij Riviera Home Finders hebben we onze eigen traditie: Onze zeilboot vaart uit en gaat voor Cannes voor anker. In Cannes is elke zomer een grote internationale vuurwerk-competitie, waar een groot aantal landen strijdt om de eerste prijs, voor het mooiste, grootste en meest spectaculaire vuurwerk. Heel indrukwekkend, en op quatorze juillet is er natuurlijk een toppertje. Met muziek, dat maakt het nog indrukwekkender, en dan gezien vanaf de boot... Een heel bijzondere ervaring! We gaan het weer meemaken, met collega's en klanten, en ik zal er verslag van doen! Als je zelf het vuurwerk wilt gaan bekijken raad ik je aan vroeg te gaan: het is verschrikkelijk moeilijk om later een parkeerplaats te vinden. Na afloop van het vuurwerk kan je het beste een bar induiken: het eerste uur is Cannes een grote file de stad uit! Het vuurwerk begint om 10 uur.

En voor je het weet is het weer zover: Property Thursday op je radio! Behalve een hoop informatie en tips over de Real Estate markt in het algemeen en allerlei zaken die daarmee te maken hebben, presenteert Pete Nugent de "property van de week". Onze Top-makelaar Jeroen leidt hem rond in een bijzonder huis dat Riviera Home Finders te koop heeft en beantwoordt vragen van Pete. Ik was er vandaag bij toen ze zo'n item aan het opnemen waren, en het was heel interessant - het huis zelf (ver-bij-ste-rend!! Ik kon op m'n gemakje door een 7,9 miljoen euro villa wandelen alsof ik er hoorde - ach ja, radio hè..) En de manier waarop radio tegenwoordig gemaakt wordt deed me weer denken aan een tijdje geleden, toen ik zelf ook nog programma's maakte bij de Nederlandse radio. Als ik dan iemand ging interviewen, moest ik een "nagra" meesjouwen, een draagbare bandrecorder van tenminste 5 kilo (misschien wel zwaarder) Op de foto bij de engelse vertaling hieronder zie je hem tussen mijn benen staan, een immens ding. Plus een joekel van een microfoon en niet te vergeten een dikke koptelefoon. Als je nu naar de jongens kijkt: de volledige apparatuur is niet groter dan een mobieltje en een pen. Maar het werk is er niet minder leuk op geworden gelukkig, zeker als je het hier in Zuid Frankrijk kunt doen!

Next thing you know: Another property thursday! Apart from a lot of information that has to do with the Real Estate market and related issues, Riviera Radio will have Pete Nugent presenting the "Property of the week". Our Top-agent Jeroen shows him around in a really special house that Riviera Home Finders have for sale, tells about it and answers questions from Pete. Today I was present when they recorded the item - and it was an interesting experience - the house itself (a-ma-zing!! I got to walk through a 7,9 million property as if I belonged there). And the way the radio works today brought back memories... I used to work for the dutch radio and when we interviewed people we carried a "Nagra" around (weight: at least 5 kilos) with a table-lamp-sized microphone and wearing huge headphones. But look at the equipment now: no more than the size of a mobile phone! The pics tell all...

France - Future Home Owners country

The Prime-Minister of France, François Fillon, is going to execute the plan of President Sarkozy - to make sure soon 70% of the French will be property-owners. At this moment, of the french families 56% actually owns their home. According to Fillon, the percentage of people that have bought their house, indicates their confidence in the future and in a stable or even growing prosperity. France is a bit behind in the percentages of home-owners: in England 71% of the population owns a house, in Sweden 76%, in Greece it is 77% and Ireland and Spain really have confidence: 84% owns their home. (In the Netherlands almost 50% rents by the way...)

In his inauguration speech, Fillon announced that per year 500,000 new houses will be built, of which 120,000 are meant for the financially less strong. Another measure is the proposal of tax reduction for home-owners with a mortgage. Right now it is a bill but if it becomes a law, the "crédit d'impot" will amount to 20% over a maximum of €7500 yearly paid tax for five years. On top of that, for every child in the household, comes €500 more. And so France becomes the "country of home-owners". Which is good for the property market - which is excellent for: Riviera Home Finders... Hi! We're back...

Op dit moment heeft 56% van de Franse gezinnen een eigen huis. Volgens de minister geven mensen met een eigen huis, in tegenstelling tot huurders, het signaal af dat ze vertrouwen op de toekomst en op een voortdurende en zelfs groeiende welvaart. Frankrijk loopt achter in de percentages huisbezitters want in Engeland is maar liefst 71% eigenaar, in Zweden 76%, in Griekenland 77% en Ierland en Spanje voeren de lijst aan met 84%. In Nederland wordt relatief ook veel gehuurd overigens,bijna 50%. Fillon heeft in zijn regeringstoespraak aangekondigd dat 500.000 nieuwe woningen moeten bijkomen per jaar; 120.000 daarvan zijn bestemd voor de minder draagkrachtigen. Een andere maatregel is het invoeren van de belastingteruggave voor huiseigenaren met een hypotheek. Dat is nu nog een wetsvoorstel maar als die wet er door komt, zal het crédit d’impot 20% bedragen over een maximum van € 7500 jaarlijkse rente en dat voor vijf jaar. Bovendien komt er voor elk inwonend kind nog €500 bovenop het plafond. Zo wordt ook Frankrijk een "land van huiseigenaren" En dat is goed voor de huizenmarkt - en dàt is weer uitstekend voor ... Riviera Home Finders... Hoi! We zijn er weer...

Radio Riviera's Property Thursday III

Vorige week had ik het al een keer over het sponsoren van "Property Thursday" door Riviera Home Finders. Onze gastheer op die dagen is de onnavolgbare Australische journalist Peter Nugent. Als je Riviera Radio aanzet kun je hem horen als presentator van de breakfast show (7 tot 11 uur) en hij is ook de presentator van de meeste sport items. Maar wie is de man achter de stem? Peter James Nugent, geboren in Melbourne op 26 Maart 1966, begon zijn carrière als reporter, presentator en producer van kranten, radio en televisie in Australia. Hij kwam aan de franse Riviera terecht toen hij behoefte had aan een overzeese vakantie en bleef nog wat langer hangen - om het sportnieuws te schrijven en te presenteren op Riviera Radio. Pete houdt van sporten in het algemeen en van Formule I in het bijzonder, dus Monaco - waar de Riviera Radio studio's zich bevinden is niet zo'n gekke keus! Hij houdt veel van motorrijden en toert elke dag van huis naar werk en terug over de Basse Corniche. Verder loopt Pete hard - hij rende de Marathon van Parijs uit in 3 uur en 27 minuten en -last but not least- is hij een fanatiek wielrenner, hij reed de tour Paris - Nice afgelopen september. De laatste tijd besteedt hij echter wat minder aandacht aan de sportieve liefhebberijen: in November 2005 kregen Pete en zijn Franse vrouw een tweeling (twee meisjes). Als je hem zo hoort op de radio, klinkt Pete of hij van het leven geniet en laten we eerlijk te zijn, wie zou dat niet doen in dezelfde omstandigheden!
